Historical Setting
The Maldives was ruled by kings and queens. The location of the Maldives were important, for it was very useful in trading. The Maldives used this route to trade goods and for transportation. The Maldives neighbors were Sri Lanka and India.
After the 16th century, Europe took much of the Indian trade. The Portuguese, Dutch, and France began interfere with the politics. However, when it became a British protectorate in the 19th century, the Maldivian rulers were allowed to do self governance.
Maldives gained total independence from the British on 26 July 1965. However, there was an airbase in Atoll until 1967. A departure for the British almost happened when discussing about the future of the air base. The Soviet Union made a move to request the use of the base, but the Maldives refused.
The greatest challenge in Maldives that they were giving a minimum space of fishing and giving culture. The rising sea level also was disastrous, for the islands will become flooded.
